Buntings! Buntings!

June 28th, 2008 · 6 Comments

There were two male painted buntings at the bird feeder this morning. I haven’t seen them for at least two years, so was very excited that they were here. I’m not sure if the last two photos are of a female bird – anyone know what it is?

And my cat better leave them alone..

Thank you to Jo & Joanna, who know more about birds than I realized – it’s a house finch, although this guy seems younger than other photos I found online.  And thank you, Susan for checking them out…

No clue what the bird is, but it was a treat to see them here. Thanks!

Great photos! I think the bird might be a house finch. Male. :( Aren’t all males the prettiest? Hmmm.

Click on my name for a link to a house finch photo I took at my grandmother’s house a couple of years ago. And, that post has a link to the female version. He looks like a very plump version of those last two above. The other guys are awfully colorful! Very cool.

I actually know very little about birds. I let Dad figure ‘em out for me!

    Hi Regina,
Love the pictures of the painted buntings! How lucky you are to have such beautiful wildlife in your backyard. That little bird is a male housefinch – showing his colors for breeding.

Thank all of you for your information on the birds – it’s good to know the house finch now, I figured out a chickadee on Saturday with my sister, and this morning saw TWO male painted buntings flying around each other. That was very cool!
