Good use of the toned paper for the dark background. Good shape and definition on the petals too and nice, soft colors.

Stacy - I was going to make it lighter, but decided I liked the soft colors. Thanks!

Hi Regina, I love your petals, they are just gorgeous. Glad I found your blog - one of the best things about VSD is finding new blogs to bookmark!

Nice interpretation of the ref Regina, I’m always impressed when I see someone using black paper, and this works very well.

Oh, clever idea - using the pencils on a dark background!
I love how you have achieved such wonderful lights on the petals and the bowl. Great sketch.

I love this! The dark background, the color, the comp, it’s really lovely!

very soft looking petals
Good idea to use the black paper, saves on dark pencils and adds a lot of value to it.

Looks more like pastel than colored pencil. Very pretty.

I love the touch of blue in this.

great texture in this piece, good use of highlight, love your interpretation, the black paper was a good way to deal with the background

So delicate without being wimpy- really nice. I like the touch of blue too.

This is lovely. It has a quietness to it that really speaks about the flowers.

Sorry I couldn’t get back on to respond to everyone’s nice comments - the cold/flu I had all last week keeps trying to come back and get me!
Thank you Melissa for your comments on my blog - I enjoyed looking at yours also, especially your (first!) colored pencil animal portrait - it was great and the black on blue was very interesting!

Andy - Thank you! I usually like the black paper, but couldn’t bring the color up on this as much as I wanted to. But overall, I liked the final piece. And your colored pencil tomatoes look wonderful!
Jeanette - Thank you for your comments - it was more muted than a lot of the pieces that came out of this study - I loved looking at all of them.

Kari - I’ve done a few things on black paper, and actually didn’t like this one as much as some others. I did an onion a while back that I like better. (http://www.fallshadows.com/spicey.html) Your watercolor was just amazing!
Ann - thank you for your comments - I think next time I may try a lighter background like you did - yours was so lovely.

I love this one, Regina. To me it has an olde worlde quality … sort of sepia and faded photos and memories of times past.
(Hope the ‘flu has disappeared and you’re feeling better.)

I like how Vivienne put it, that sounds about right.
Very nice work!

Just wonderful that you did this on black paper. It is amazing at how the medium changes the feel and look.

Thank you, Vivienne and Paulette - it did kind of end up that way, but I like how you described it, with the sepia and faded aspect.

Sherrie - black paper seems to add a lot to certain still lifes, and I like doing light or colorful objects against a black background.
