Virtual Sketch – Drawing of Tree with Shadows

The directions say to post on Saturday, but I finished this tonight and if I don’t do it now, I probably won’t remember to post it.   Virtual Sketch Link November

Sketch of tree with shadows

I love trees – drawing, painting, watching trees. This was done with a mechanical pencil on acid-free card stock. It took about two hours.  It was a fun and “grokking” sketch. I learn more about shadows and balance when I focus on great trees like this.

I love this interpretation – very creative. I started in graphite but gave up and moved to acrylics. This is very nice!

I thought about doing this in colored pencil or watercolor, but started in graphite during a phone conversation and then I couldn’t stop. The colors of the original photo are fantastic, but I didn’t think I’d have time to do them justice. Thanks, Rose. Can’t wait to see your acrylic!

    Yeah, baby!!
    Very cool, Regina.
    I’m ‘tree-ish’ myself.

Thank you, Leslie. I like to look at a tree and try to “feel” the balance – - weights and counter-weights, especially on a windy day. Trees are amazing.

    Very nice!

Nice Regina. I like that you are one with the tree. That is what Tiger Woods does in golf, become one with the ball or some such. :) Lovely drawing.

Thank you, Joanna and Jo – I appreciate your comments.

Regina, seeing your pencil sketch makes me wish I had given mine a try. I really like the negative drawing in the bottom right corner and how you chose to add just a few leaves on the tree.

Brilliant. I really like this, great style and love the way you’ve suggested a background full of plant life.

Very nice. The strength of the tree comes through. The bark texture is great. Isn’t it just amazing what you do with just one pencil?

Lovely pencil work! You really handled the shade well. I like the background too.

Your graphite drawing is charming. While the tree is interesting with it’s shape and shadows, my eye went right to the negative shapes of ferns and dappled grass in the lower right.

Thank you, Stacy – I’m thinking that maybe I should make that negative drawing a little less dark, as it seems to take away from the tree. But it was a great photo to draw from!

Andy – thank you so much. It’s always difficult to figure out where and when to stop on a drawing like this.

Jan – That bark was interesting to attempt to duplicate – the grain seemed to go different ways on various parts of the tree.

Regina, this is a very lovely drawing. I find it exudes a real sense of peace and lightness.

Lovely drawing–absolutely wonderful sense of light shining through leaves!

Paulette – thank you so much – it was fun to work on.
Sherry – I appreciate your comments – and I’m still wondering if I need to subdue that area where the fern is…..
Christine – thank you so much. That means a great deal to me.
Laura – I wasn’t sure if a pencil sketch could really give a sense of filtered light – I may still try this in color some day.

Outstanding drawing! You did a terrific job, especially on the texture of the trunk and on the shadows.
In reply to your comment on my blog. . . Yupo is plastic not paper and watercoloring on it is a bit like painting on glass–slippery! It’s a fun support that usually gives me interesting results.

Wow. Sometimes I forget how a graphite drawing can such a thing of beauty. Thanks for reminding me. Great work!

Thank you Brenda – the texture on the bark was challenging!

Rhonda – what a very nice thing to say. You made my day!

I am envious of your ability to draw like this. :-)
    Really beautiful.

really lovely, tender pencil rendering. Love what’s going on at lower right with those leaves, ferns, something coming thru. very evocative.
