Since I have always loved the most basic element of art – pencil drawing – I wanted to post one that I did a few years ago, and links to some of my favorite pencil artists who definitely excel at pencil “painting”. For me, drawing has always been a part of my life. It is there for me when I’m stuck in an airport or when I need to relax in a quiet part of the house. It can be the beginning of a painting or the final illustration of a tree I really liked.
It’s not a flashy medium, and it takes a lot of patience. Really a lot of patience. When I start to think I’ve made progress as an artist, a pencil drawing helps me to realize how far I still have to go. Pencil drawing is definitely an art in itself, and also a great foundation to build on for other mediums. It is hard to hide a mistake or lack of skill in a pencil drawing. Good pencil drawing (which is not tracing), requires a knowledge of perspective, composition and values.
Tinker, sleeping – drawn while she sat on my lap, which was rather tricky!
Please check out these great pencil artists :

Regina this is a lovely cat – well done. I was pleasantly surprised to scroll down and see my name as one of your favorite pencil artists – thank you so much for the compliment!

Karen – I love your pencil work! Pencil artwork is usually so underrated – most people don’t realize how much time and work go into a drawing.

Ah, Regina. I remember this. It is so beautiful. You artists that work in pencil amaze me. I have not the patience, as you well know. I will just keep looking and dreaming……. I still have one of Leslie’s fairy books and I get it out and look once in a while.

Thank you, Jo. I think of pencil drawing more as therapy than an exercise in patience (most of the time)
I enjoy looking at Leslie’s fairy book, too! http://www.lesliehawes.com/

Leslie – Need a tissue?
I remember some of your excellent kneaded eraser tricks, but they were also for effect, not just for changes.
That very kitteh is next to me here at 6am, playing with computer cords. She is no ceiling cat…

I don’t think I ever heard that one. The only one I remember is a-t-t-i-c. Immature even for second grade
